As the largest private practice cancer center on the West Coast, The Oncology Institute continues to provide extensive services including state-of-the-art infusion centers, chemotherapy educational sessions, in-house support groups, dietary and nutritional counseling, in-house pharmacy, financial counseling, clinical trials, comprehensive lab testing, and end of life counseling. We also offer support programs to help patients and families cope with the challenges brought on by cancer. Today, the Oncology Institute has served over 150,000 patients.
Job Summary:
The Director, Accounts Receivable, is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all accounts receivable activities with a goal of maximizing reimbursement in a cost-effective manner. The Director will oversee the overall policies, objectives and initiatives for our company's accounts receivable and collections activities. This individual will work with our outsourced vendor to coordinate all accounts receivable work efforts. Ensures compliance with state and federal laws and regulations for managed care, government programs and other third party payers. Monitors all RCM processes to determine improvement opportunities and encourages team-based results.
It is preferred that the Accounts Receivable Director be able to work on-site Monday - Friday at our Cerritos, CA corporate HQ. We are also considering candidates who can commit to a hybrid schedule, 2 - 3 days on-site at Cerritos HQ.
Essential Functions:
In collaboration with the Vice President and RCM Director, the Director, AR, will coordinate oversight of AR processes in accordance with established internal and third-party payer requirements:


  • Organize and direct all activities to ensure control and management of patient and insurance accounts receivable, which includes collections, customer service, and denial management.
  • Demonstrates the ability to supervise and coordinate the accounts receivable management function to consistently produce accurate and timely payments on our claims and statements
  • Reviews data for accuracy and ensures billing is properly vetted before submission to payors
  • Works with the outsourced vendor to ensure operational effectiveness and efficiency
  • In conjunction with the VP RCM, develops KPIs and dashboard reports to monitor and benchmark AR performance. Set internal goals for KPI metrics.
  • Identify revenue cycle problems and implement solutions for improvement
  • Develops relationships with payor sources, seeking to resolve any outstanding claims which have been escalated
  • Develop and implement improvement plans for underperforming KPI benchmarks and internal goals
  • Maintain up-to-date expertise and knowledge of healthcare billing laws, rules, regulations, and developments necessary for the organization to make informed decisions; communicates knowledge to staff
  • Maintains knowledge of ICD-10 diagnostic coding and CPT/HCPC procedures codes and third-party reimbursement billing requirements, including submittal procedures for (HCFA 1500)
  • Validates correct payment methodology per contract guidelines
  • Develop and deliver organized, concise, yet thorough communications regarding proposed changes, developments, and opportunities affecting the organization and collections department
  • Collaborates with internal stakeholders to maximize efficiencies across multiple functions

    Required Education and Experience:

    • 5+ years of experience in collection and credit work
    • 5 or more years of supervisory experience in the field of Revenue Cycle Management
    • High school diploma or equivalent

      Preferred Education and Experience:

      • A Bachelor's Degree in healthcare management or related field of study

        Required Skills/Abilities:

        • Basic understanding of applicable state and federal collection laws including the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
        • Basic understanding of statistics and data analysis
        • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel and ability to learn EMR and RCM software program(s)
        • Comfortable working with patients, families, caregivers and team members in emotionally intense situations
        • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions
        • Excellent leadership and persuasive skills
        • Ability to work with a team and independently
        • Basic understanding of statistics and data analysis
        • Strong communication skills, written and otherwise
        • Strong interpersonal skills; professional demeanor
        • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
        • Ability to prioritize tasks
        • Maintain regular attendance

          Team Leadership and Development, in coordination with Human Resources as appropriate:

          • Coordinate the recruitment and orientation of team members
          • Mentor, cross-train, and develop skill set among team members, conducts weekly account reviews, team meetings and 1:1s
          • Conducts performance reviews, establish and monitor individual goal achievements
          • Utilize internal and external systems and/resources for training
          • Comply with and educate team members on relevant state and federal regulations (e.g., Department of Managed Care Health & Safety Law)
          • Work with leadership teams to enhance overall department processes, performance, and quality results

            Administrative Management:

            • Oversee administrative functions related to staff management including time card approvals, vacation and sick time requests, and employee changes
            • Facilitate preparation of scheduled reports to management
            • As an exempt position, evening and/or weekend hours may be required to ensure the fulfillment of all duties and responsibilities
            • Other duties as may be assigned or modified, or alternate work schedule

              Managerial Responsibilities:
              Directly supervises 4 staff who perform patient financial assistance. This position carries out managerial responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training direct reports; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
              Salary Range Estimate: $105,000 - $120,000
